My emotional takeaway after my first yoga class was rather sobering: I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to laugh or cry. From Downward Dog into Tree Pose and back into Warrior – but the peaceful one, please. Of course… That was in 2015.
What can I say? I went back. And back again. Today, yoga means so much more to me than just the practice on the mat. It connects body, mind and attitude, and it also accompanies me in everyday life – in the way I relate to myself, to others and to life itself.
On the mat, I come back to myself. Yoga challenges me physically and mentally, gives me direction and helps me turn inward – even when all my senses are on high alert and everything around me feels overwhelming. Yoga puts me back together when life gets turbulent. It helps me relax when the pressure is high. It can take me to the edge of frustration and then make me laugh again. At the same time, yoga helps me set clear boundaries in the outside world.
Being able to teach today feels like a great gift. I have already had the opportunity to learn so much, while knowing how much there still is to discover. This sense of openness and humility is exactly what I want to bring into my teaching.
Do you have any tips for Yoga newbies?
Put on some comfortable clothes and just come along – with openness and curiosity. Yoga is so much more than a flexible body and incense sticks. It can be demanding and challenging. And it can make you laugh while you sweat – and vice versa. Yoga is an invitation to explore and grow, whether you are just starting out or have been practising for years. Stay open, stay curious and allow yourself to be surprised – again and again.
